Don't you think more people would be motivated to return printing supplies if you offered a financial incentive? |
Customers around the world have participated in HP's printing supplies recycling program for

HP customers are motivated by the knowledge that their used printing supplies are being recycled responsibly.

 |
What happens to the printing supplies when they are returned? |
| All returned HP printing supplies go through a state-of-the-art, environmentally responsible,
multi-phase recycling process. They're sent to recycling facilities located within the same region and are
reduced to raw materials that can be used to make new metal and plastic products. Plastics and metals from
recycled HP printing supplies have been used to make automotive parts, microchip processing trays, serving
trays, spools and other everyday, new products. HP is working to include qualified recycled content in select
imaging products and supplies. Most materials are recycled and some are also used in energy recovery, offsetting
fossil fuel consumption. |
 |
Does HP use materials from the recycling program in the manufacture of new HP products? |
| As a part of our environmental commitment, HP is working to include qualified
recycled content in select imaging products and supplies. For example, HP has developed an HP Scanjet
scanner component made from 25% recycled inkjet cartridge plastic and 75% recycled plastic bottles,
while meeting all part and product specifications and requirements. HP will continue to investigate
opportunities for using recycled plastics to deliver high-quality, reliable and environmentally sound products. |
 |
Do you use a partner to help you recycle? |
| Yes. We enlist shipping companies to collect and return printing supplies. Once the
supplies have been returned, HP works with some of the most advanced recycling organizations in the
world to recover and recycle materials from used HP printing supplies. Because of the manner in which
they are constructed, the printing supplies cannot effectively be recycled using conventional, commercial
processes. Today, HP continues to invest considerable time, effort, and money in research and development
efforts directed toward improving recycling capabilities and recovering greater percentages of reusable
materials from empty printing supplies. |
 |
Does HP include environmental considerations in the design of its printing supplies as well as in the recycling of them? |
Yes. Environmental stewardship is integral to HP engineering and manufacturing processes and inherent
to our corporate values. HP embraces an industry-leading lifecycle approach that optimizes the environmental
characteristics of product design, manufacture, performance and end-of-life recycling options.

Through the Design for Environment
program, HP printing supplies are made using fewer materials, consume resources more efficiently and are easier to
recycle at the end of their use. Some specific improvements HP has made include:

Resource Efficiency
- Through design innovation has increased recyclability and resource efficiency by reducing the
average number of plastic resins used in HP LaserJet monochrome
print cartridges by more than half and the average number of component parts by more than a third.
Improved Recyclability
- Plastic parts in HP printing supplies weighing more than 25 grams are marked with internationally recognized ISO symbols to help material identification during the recycling process.
- The elimination of adhesive used in large-format HP inkjet printing supplies increased their recyclability by 25 percent.
Additional information about HP's environmental programs and initiatives can be found at: www.hp.com/environment

 |
Does HP use recycled materials in packaging and is the packaging recyclable? |
Yes to both. HP’s redesigned inkjet and LaserJet print cartridge packaging
is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 37 million pounds in 2007.
- HP recently redesigned HP inkjet print cartridge multipack packaging which
combined with a previous change from PVC to PP/HDPE in 2003, has brought the total material reduction to over 80%.
The new packaging is made with recycled content paperboard.
- HP inkjet photo value pack packaging has been reduced by 10%, by weight, and recycled content paperboard
replaced PVC (#3) plastic.
- HP inkjet print cartridge tri-pack packaging sold in club stores has been reduced by over 40%, by weight,
and recycled PET (RPETG or #1) replaces "virgin" PVC (#3).
- HP single inkjet cartridge packaging in North America continues to use 80% recycled paper, minimum 35% post-consumer content, minimum.
- HP LaserJet print cartridge packaging now uses 45% less packaging material, by weight. Exterior corrugated cardboard carton
continues to be made from 30-85% post-consumer recycled content.
- Installation guide inserts for monochrome HP LaserJet printing supplies have been replaced with installation instructions printed
on the external packaging, saving approximately 350 tons of paper per year.
